Sony Xperia C

Sony Mobile Communications Malaysia today announced the Malaysian availability of its new smartphone, the Xperia C. Aiming to be a low-cost midrange device, it sports a quad-core MediaTek MT6589 processor, clocking in at 1.2 GHz. The graphics is handled by a PowerVR SGX544 GPU and it has a 1 GB RAM. The internal storage is a little small at just 4 GB, but it has a microSD card slot accepting cards of up to 32 GB.

As with all recent Xperia devices, it has the same gorgeous OmniBalance design. Even at its low price point, Sony managed to get this phone to have a relatively large 5-inch qHD display, though its 960 x 540 resolution panel only has around 220 pixels per inch.

The front-facing VGA camera is nothing to write home about, and nor is the main 8-megapixel camera with Sony’s Exmor R sensor. It does however support your regular smartphone camera features like HDR photo and 1080p video recording. Sony is throwing in a smart voice guide feature, that could guide the user to frame the shot properly when taking self-portraits using the rear camera. Selfies taken can be subjected to a ‘portrait retouch’ later with its built-in feature, to soften skin tones and what not.

Besides the low cost, the main appeal of this phone is its dual-SIM capabilities. It does not support 4G LTE, but of course has two micro-SIM card slots. Along with having two phone numbers, users could set the phone to have separate custom ringtones for each SIM. The radio also supports HSPA+ dual cell, with theoretical download speeds of up to 42 Mbps.

It ships with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, plus Sony’s skin atop. A suite of Sony softwares can be expected, such as the WALKMAN app. The audio is managed by Sony’s audio enhancement technology like ClearAudio+ mode, xLOUD, and 3D Surround Sound (Virtualphones Technology).

Tying it all up is the 2,390 mAh bettery, which is user-removable. Sony claims that with its ‘Battery STAMINA Mode’ on, it could push the phone to have up to four times the battery life of other smartphones in its class.

Sony Xperia C comes in black, white, and purple color finishes. It is available at a recommended price of RM999.
