Samsung GALAXY Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) launched in Malaysia

Samsung Malaysia Electronics announced the Malaysian availability of its Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition tablet yesterday. It was first being unveiled two months ago in Samsung’s Unpacked event in Berlin, where the Note 3 was also being launched.

The new Note 10.1 has the same soft textured back with faux-stitchings that simulates the look and feel of a leather-bound journal. Its 10.1-inch WQXGA Super Clear LCD has 2560 x 1600 resolutions at a rather high 299 PPI, one of the highest pixel density found in a 10-inch tablet. The Google Nexus 10 tablet — also made by Samsung — has the same pixel count.

Powering the tablet is a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with its quad-core Krait 400 CPU clocked to 2.3 GHz. And just like the Note 3, has the same Adreno 330 GPU and 3 GB RAM. The model we’ll be getting in Malaysia has 32 GB of on-board storage with a microSD card slot taking in an additional 64 GB.

The 2014 Edition of Note 10.1 to arrive in Malaysia will support 4G LTE (model number SM-P605). It takes only micro-SIM cards. This LTE SKU also supports DC-HSPA+, Wi-Fi 802.11ac dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, and Bluetooth 4.0 LE, GPS; all the highest or the latest specs.

Both cameras on this tablet are backside-illuminated; the main one has 8 megapixels while the front-facing shooter is 2 megapixels.

Its preinstalled Android 4.3 Jelly Bean comes with Samsung’s TouchWiz skin, as always. Adopting the same features found on the Note 3, Note 10.1 capitalizes on the screen real estate to display a magazine-like layout for a more immersive content consumption experience.

There are two major characteristics found only on the Note series.

The first is S Pen, which is no regular capacitive stylus but digitizer pen that has 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity and can be used for note taking, drawing, et cetera. With the S Pen hovered above the display, pressing the button will launch the Air Command pop-up that contains a fan of 5 apps/actions: Action Memo, Pen Window, Scrapbook, Screen Write, and S Finder.

The second is how the Galaxy Note series is one of the only few mobile platforms that could display multiple apps at the same time, great for multitasking. The Pen Window mentioned earlier will allow one to draw a rectangle of any size and launch a selected few apps — like YouTube or the calculator — to run within the confines. The Multi Window feature is still present, allowing two apps to run snapped side-by-side, and contents could be dragged and dropped between these two apps.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition comes in Jet Black and Classic White. It will be available beginning November 7th, at all Samsung Brand Stores and authorized dealers nationwide. The recommended retail price is RM2,299. More information here.

Reuben Thum's love for technology dates as far back as the Sega Master System era when people are still rocking out on an 8-bit "Dixie's Land" chiptune. His gig as a bartender later did not douse his interest for tech one bit, as he then dedicated a few years of his life assisting users to achieve the same love, deep in the bowels of the tech support world. Currently, he just feels weirded out writing about himself from a third person's perspective.
